Day 5 – Lantau Island, Goodbye Hong Kong

Last days are always a problem when travelling, you are now travelling with your bags, you have no residence and you’re in that constant state of “I have a flight to catch” – given all that we decided to go and make the most of our last day in Hong Kong to go to Lantau Island, but before we could do that, we had to do something with our luggage.

Turns out, they thought of that over there and they came up with a thing called in-town check in where they let you check your luggage in the city, provided you take the train to the airport. Oh, and they also have free shuttles to the train station where you can do it. Pretty damn cool!

And indeed we took the shuttle, put our bags, showed the flight ticket to the person at the station. That’s when the guy told us that I don’t have a Visa for Australia. I know I have a visa without a doubt.

How do I know that? To answer that we will have to go back three weeks to our kitchen in New York where as we were doing the dishes we were told that we would need a visa for Australia – we had no idea… We went on their website and were told it would take anywhere between 3-5 weeks to get it. Long story short, it took less than a week, but man, what a week… Oh, and while we were doing that, we noticed that my Passport was about to expire (within 8 months, but at the time we get back to NY it will be less than 6 months – not a good thing) so we took care of that as well.

Back to the story – after about 30 minutes of suspense the rep got back to us and updated us that he was mistaken and that everything is ok. PHEW!!!

And so we were on our way to Lantau where we should see a giant Budhaa statue – sounds like fun! We took the Airport Express train to the island and were impressed with how efficient it is (so much so, that when you arrive at the airport, there are baggage trollys waiting for you in front of each train door.

We took the bus from the airport to Lantau and it took us to an awesome international food court. So we spent about 45 minutes going between all of the options until we decided on Thai for Elad and Korean noodles for Sivan. We are very bad when presented with many options…

 

 

We took the Ngong Ping 360 cable car (Paid a few bucks extra for the diamond experience – see through floor and less lines). That was really nice, we were on the gondola for approximately 20 minutes to get up the hill and saw amazing views: the ocean, a forest, the city of lantau with apartment complexes which we deduced contain anywhere between 20 and 40 thousand people each and an ever growing Buddha sculpture.

After reaching the top, we proceeded towards the Buddha, through a garden of lesser god sculptures and up many many stairs we finally arrived at the sculpture. This was my first giant Buddha so I was impressed, Sivan had visited China and Tibet in the past so was slightly less impressed but it was really nice. It was sorrounded by smaller sculptures of what I imagined were maidens offering gifts to it and by a million tourists taking pictures with it.

We took the cable car back to the island and the bus back to the airport and the plane to Australia, keep reading for Australia, starting at Cairns!

היום החמישי, דצמ’ 4, האי לאנטאו

קמנו בבוקר וארזנו חפצינו – היום בלילה טסים לאוסטרליה – ואחרי א. הבוקר ניסינו להבין מה עושים עם המזוודות בין הבוקר שבו אנחנו רוצים לטייל, והערב שבו צריך להיות בשדה התעופה. מסתבר, שיש רכבת שמובילה אנשים לשדה, נקראת האיירפורט אקפרס. לנוחותם של הלקוחות, הוקם שירות שנקרא צ'ק אין בעיר (in-town check in): בשתי תחנות רכבת מרכזיות בהונג קונג וקאולון ואפשר לעשות צ'ק אין לטיסה, לקבל כרטיס עליה למטוס ולשלוח את המזוודות עד 24 שעות לפני הטיסה. לא רק זה, גם יש אוטובוס שאטל חינם שאוסף אנשים לתחנות הללו מכל מיני מקומות בעיר, וספציפית 2 מטר מהמלון שלנו – מדהים כמה מסודר ונוח!
אז עלינו על השאטל, הלכנו לעשות צ'ק אין ואפילו קיבלנו הנחה על הרכבת לשדה. הכל היה ממש טוב כשלפתע נותן השירות בא לאלעד ואמר לו שהוא יצטרך להגיש בקשה חדשה לויזה אוסטרלית, כי הוא הוציא דרכון חדש אחרי שהוא קיבל כבר ויזה. הממ.... אמאלה? עודדנו את הבחור לבדוק מחדש את העובדות ואת מקור המידע בטענה שביררנו ולא אמורה להיות בעיה (זו היתה טענה נכונה!) ואחרי ארבעה עידודים והמתנה דרוכה, הוא חזר, התנצל ואמר שהיה לו מידע שגוי מנסיון העבר ושהכל בסדר. יש! יאללה, נוסעים לראות בודהה!

אה, אחרי הרבה ימים ללא גילוח, אלעד החליט להתגלח ולהתנסות בשפם. שפטו בעצמכם.
האי לאנטאו הוא אחד האיים הגדולים בהונג קונג, ובו שוכן שדה התעופה. האטרקציה העיקרית (שאנחנו יודעים עליה) באי, הוא רכבל שעולה לכפר בשם גנונג פונג (gnong pong) ופסל עצום של בודהה.

עקבנו אחרי ההוראות: הגענו לשדה תעופה עם הרכבת ההיא, והתרשמנו מכמה שהם (סינים) יעילים וחושבים על פרטים גם. כל פעם שרכבת מגיעה לשם, מחכות מלא עגלות כאלו של שדה תעופה לנוחות הטסים.

חיפשנו את האוטובוס שאמרו לנו שייקח אותנו לאיפה שהרכבל מתחיל – S1. כשהגענו ליעד, החלטנו שצריך לאכול אז כיוון שכל תחנת תחתית היא בעצם גם קניון, מצאנו את הפוד קורט ועברנו מסעדה מסעדה בחיפושנו אחר האוכל. מה שהיה ממש מעניין ומרשים זה שהאוכל היה מאוד מגוון וממלא מדינות: היה אוכל טאייוני, סינגפורי, סיני, מקאווי, תאילנדי, יפני, מערבי ומה לא (חומוס, לא היה חומוס). תוך שעה שעתיים החלטתי מה אני רוצה לאכול וישבנו. אחרי זה, או לפני זה (אני כבר לא זוכרת) גם החלטנו לטייל קצת בסופר של הקניון, לראות מה המקומיים קונים. למדנו שאנשים שעובדים שם מרוויחים $4 דולר הונג קונגי לשעה. איך למדנו את זה אתם שואלים? היה שלט שמחפש עובדים ופשוט היה כתוב כמה מרוויחים, אח קומוניזם!

אחרי שהשתאינו מהגודל, רוחב וגובה של הבניינים באיזור, עלינו על הרכבל, בחרנו תא עם רצפה שקופה (תמורת סכום צנוע לשדרוג) ווואו! 20 דקות של רכבל עם נופים מדהימים: יבשה, ים, עצים ובנייני מגורים עצומים (כ-40 קומות האחד) וקומפלקסיי מגורים של 20-40 אלף אנשים. אה, ראינו גם איזה פסל גדול של בודהה במרחק.

כשהגענו למעלה הכל היה מאוד תיירותי, והיה וייפיי. מיד עצרתי להתחבר – כי היה כתוב! ניסיתי להתחמק מלטפס, אבל אלעד אמר שצריך, אז טיפסנו לכיוון הבודהה, ספרנו בערך 100 מדרגות (ארורות) והתרשמנו מגודלו ומהשיער שלו (שהזכיר לי את השיער של אדי), צילמנו ויאללה, לרדת לפני שסוגרים את הרכבל.

משם נסענו לשדה ובדרך קראנו על האיזור כדי להבין מה לעזאזל קורה עם כל הבניינים הללו, ולמדנו שהסינים החליטו (נראה לי בסביבות 1990) ליישב את האיזור ובעצם בנו בנייני ענק ושכנעו אנשים לעבור לשם, והם היו אלו שבנו את שדה התעופה. היו איזה 3-4 גלים של בניה והתיישבות, ויש שם אוכלוסיה מאוד גדולה עכשיו יחסית.

Day 4: llama island

Not really sure why it’s called Llama island, it is one of the many islands that make up Honk Kong, the most central of which having the uninspired name “Hong Kong”. Llama island is a strange one though – it’s really small, like 6 miles top to bottom and the most advanced form of transportation there is a golf cart (of which I think they have two). Another oddity about this island is it’s inhabitats, it was settled in the sixties by westerners who wanted to form some kind of communal living environment (read commune).

We decided to do the tourist thing and walk the island from one end to the other (there are two settlements and a dirt road that connects them) so we woke up in the morning, had our regular east meets west breakfast and went on to take a ferry to the island.

When we got off the ferry we saw A LOT of bicycles and pinups on a community wall (in English) selling a 1982 washing machine and similar stuff. Going a bit further in the town we saw some nice gift shops and Sivan got herself some earrings she liked and we drudged on, determined to get to the other side of the island where a supposedly amazing fish restaurant awaits us.

The town itself was cute, and within the first 20 minutes of wandering through gift shops and buddihst temples, we were lost. Thankfully a nice lady with a thick British accent was kind enough to help us back on the track.

The walk itself was very easy most of the time, although there were a few hills here and there. It took us through wooded areas, to a nice beach, up a few hills with some nice views and down to the other side where the “others” lived. And of course – ever closer to our reward!

Along the route we found something you could call a restaurant – it was a guy and his wife and a big pot selling some white goo. There were a lot of very excited asians there and having recently discovered that Israel is in Asia, we decided we should go for it! When we tried to communicate with the guy, he asked hot or cold. We said hot. He proceeded to give us a cold porridge like material which didn’t taste much of anything and had a slight aftertaste of dust. I didn’t like it, Sivan put some sweet sauce on it and was somewhat fond of it. It was bean curd by the way, we figured it out.

 

Smog Kong What’s grey and white and ruins every picture you take? You guessed it, it’s smog – that hazy stuff you keep seeing on every photo from Hong Kong – Smog’s to blame. Every time you look towards a horizon in Hong Kong, it’s obscured by that annoying layer of smoke/fog coming from the many exhausts of Hong Kong cars . They say it makes for some nice sunsets. I didn’t see it.

We finally made it. The restaurant.

we arrived into a fishing village which was very picturesque and went to the restaurant Liad and Melissa recommended. It was strange – there were many aquariums with different varieities of fish – I guess to keep them fresh and to let you look your food in the eyes. I don’t like that. But the food was very good (albeit a bit expensive – I guess they know how to spot tourists there)

We ordered the tourist special, which is just a bunch of weird fish and shellfish, Sivan was very brave and tasted of everything, I freaked her out with the fish’s eyes. It was good fun

 

We headed back on a different ferry and went to good old Jimmy (remember him? the suit?) to try on my suit. We went to the mall, the suit needed some more fixing and Jimmy promised he’ll make all the necessary adjusments and send it to the US for me. While all this was happening – Sivan saw an optics store and went in to buy herself some eyeglasses she pretends she needs. I’ll try to find some pictures of her with them but for now, use your imagination.

After a long day, we took the subway to our hotel where Sivan took a short nap. By the way, this is our 4th day of the trip, and for some reason we though we should do laundry, so on the way back, we picked that up as well.

While Sivan was taking her nap, I found a nice wine bar for us where we could celebrate one of our many anniversaries (December 4th, our first date). 10 years. Damn!
