Days 13-14: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

We woke up and soaked up some sun, later that day we would take a ferry back to Airlie and then drive to the airport and fly to Brisbane (thus saving about 12 hours of driving) but for now, we can linger a bit on the beach and enjoy the views and the ocean.

We returned the car at Airlie Beach airport where they tried to charge us $3000 AUD for the tiny scratch on the bumper (Hertz sucks), we negotiated them down to “only $1000”. it’s been about 40 days since, and we still didn’t get the money back from the insurance because Hertz is not co-operating with them…

We flew to Brisbane with Virgin Australia and had to pay $40 for overweight since they are very strict about the luggage restrictions and not very nice. We arrived a bit late to the gate but our flight was delayed so it was not a problem, and we tried to use to the time to find a place to sleep in Brisbane.
Unsuccessfully.

When we landed we tried again, and this time Sivan suggested we try AirBnB, and so we did, and found a nice family that is renting a small room in their house in Brisbane. I didn’t really like living in somebody’s house but Sivan didn’t seem to mind it so much, however, we both decided that the room is just too small for our luggage and that we would only stay there for one night.

The following morning, we woke up and went to pick up another car that would serve us in the New South Wales area. Brisbane seemed like a cool city from what we could gather from our walk through it on the way to the car rental place and we had made up our minds to stay there for one more night when we get back.

We took the car and drove to the Koala sanctuary, where we got to play with koalas and feed kangoroos.

This was actually a lot of fun, until it started raining, at which point we found an internet station and started looking for accommodations for that night. We continued to explore the park until they announced they were closing at which point Sivan got her pee anxiety and went to the bathroom while I was sitting waiting and getting dirty looks from employees who could not understand why I’m not letting them go home – it was 4:30 in the afternoon after all…

P.S.

The Koala sanctuary is not just Kangaroos and Koalas, there was also a Tasmanian devil, turtles, crocodiles, a whole lot of weird lizards and birds and even dingos – wild animals who are not averse to attacking humans and eating them - We would later encounter a few of them in the wild, at night on a dark deserted beach when we’re drunk…

Keep on reading, we’ll get to that
